Using estrus detection patches to optimally time insemination improved pregnancy risk in suckled beef cows enrolled in a fixed-time artificial insemination program12

Abstract: A multilocation study examined pregnancy risk (PR) after delaying AI in suckled beef cows from 60 to 75 h when estrus had not been detected by 60 h in response to a 7-d CO-Synch + progesterone insert (CIDR) timed AI (TAI) program (d −7: CIDR insert concurrent with an injection of GnRH; d 0: PGF 2α injection and removal of CIDR insert; and GnRH injection at TAI [60 or 75 h after CIDR removal]). A total of 1,611 suckled beef cows at 15 locations in 9 states (CO, IL, KS, MN, MS, MT, ND, SD, and VA) were enrolled.… Show more

“…However, it was expected that the application of GnRH could have an effect on follicular dynamics, especially in cows that did not express estrus, as some researchers have pointed out that administering GnRH at the time of FTAI can improve reproductive rates in beef cows that do not present estrus 48 hours after removal of the P4 device (Sa Filho et al, 2011;Hill et al, 2016;Oliveira et al, 2017), a fact not observed in this study.…”

“…Aiming to increase the conception rate in animals submitted to Fixed Time Artificial Insemination (FTAI), some techniques have been studied, such as the administration of Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH). The application of GnRH at the time of the FTAI may be an option to increase the conception rate in beef cows (Hill et al, 2016;Oliveira et al, 2017), especially in cows that do not show estrus 48 hours after removal of the P4 device (Sa Filho et al, 2011). It is known that GnRH induces the pre ovulatory peak of Luteinizing Hormone (LH), synchronizing the time of ovulation and aiding in the formation of a functional CL (Gottschall et al, 2008;Perry & Perry, 2009).…”

“…Heifers were evaluated for estrus activity between CIDR removal and TAI at 2 locations (FL-1 and VA-1) by determining the activation of estrus detection patches at TAI (Estrotect; Rockway Inc., Spring Valley, WI). Heifers were considered to be in estrus when at least 50% of the rub-off coating was removed from the patch, or when the patch was absent (Hill et al, 2016). Initially, collection of estrus detection data was not an objective of this study; however, this data was collected at the FL-1 and VA-1 locations.…”

“…It is likely the decisions to use shorter delay periods were based primarily on practical considerations relative to daylight hours and outdoor temperatures at certain times of the day. Similarly, some authors seem to find a 66 h interval from PG to FTAI inconvenient, which likely influenced the selection of the earlier 58 h time point by Markwood et al (2014) and 60 h by Hill et al (2016a). Later work by some of these authors have moved toward a longer delay period as well as toward a later set of AI time points.…”

“…In separate experiments, Markwood et al (2014) and Hill et al (2016a) evaluated delaying insemination of non-estrous mature cows following the 7-d CO-Synch PG protocol, with experimental designs that somewhat mirror the original STAI work by Thomas et al (2014a,b). These authors reach similar conclusions in analysis of their results, though important differences exist with respect to experimental design.…”
