Using goal attainment scaling to evaluate a needs-led exercise programme for people with severe and profound intellectual disabilities

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether involvement in a 16 week exercise programme improved goal attainment in areas of behaviour, access to community-based experiences, health and physical competence. Participants were women with severe intellectual disability and associated challenging behaviour (setting A,N = 14) and male/female service users with profound physical and intellectual disabilities (setting B,N = 8). “…GAS has been used in different settings to evaluate clinical health program outcomes [18,19], being employed to assess the level of improvement shown by individual clients of a particular program, with the amalgamation of individual client changes being used to evaluate the overall program. The present use of GAS to evaluate the degree of change shown by a community program as a whole , as a way of evaluating a community health promotion initiative, is a novel use of this methodology.…”

“…Activities will be chosen during a goal attainment meeting (using goal attainment scaling) [ 39 ] with the individual with ID and a support person (usually a family member or health care provider). Goal attainment is widely used as an outcome measure within rehabilitation medicine [ 39 ] and has been used in studies with individuals with IDs [ 40 ]. The research group is familiar with the use of goalsetting processes in previous studies with individuals with IDs.…”

“…A more systematic goal setting and monitoring system based on the method, goal monitoring and evaluation (GME) was introduced into the LS procedures (Dunsmuir et al ., ). The GME method has been used to evaluate the outcomes of many kinds of programmes in various service contexts, initially under the name ‘goal attainment scaling’ (GAS) (Jones et al ., ). In the adopted version of GME the LS teams were asked to set two or three learning goals per case pupil before the LS cycle commenced.…”
