Using Illustrations to Make Decisions on the Most Appropriate Qualitative Research Methodology: The Industry 4.0 Scenario

Abstract: Industry 4.0 is viewed as a complex scenario. This complex scenario could be interpreted using illustrations such as sketches or drawings. Ideally, sketches and drawings are useful in illustrating complexity and multiple abstracts from observed social reality. The use of illustrations allows novice qualitative researchers to explore observed social reality in depth with less linear insight. However, few scholars mention the use of illustrations at the research planning stage because most sketches and drawings … Show more

“…The concepts of social reality are not easily interpreted, especially when exploring complex phenomena like gender issues in nursing. The drawing method, as a participatory research method, was chosen as it allows its creator to simplify the complexity of the observed socially constructed reality [ 20 ] and thereby to escape the linearity of the spoken or written word [ 21 ]. The draw-and-write technique is not a new method of data collection and has been used in a variety of settings as either a stand-alone method or as part of a wider set of research methods [ 17 ].…”

“…1. The prior knowledge of the students about the circular economy and recycling was assessed through qualitative analysis according to the method of drawing as a qualitative research tool from a social complexity perspective (Janis et al, 2020). The validity or the accuracy of the survey and the data collection was guaranteed by the three co-coders of the data-the initial drawings of the students were repeatedly revised to ensure that they were unambiguously understandable and reliable (Hayashi et al, 2019).…”

“…Qualitative research has been utilized for investigating smart manufacturing previously. In some instances, these projects focus on the methodology and advocacy of particular research approaches [15,34]. Marrucci et al's [21] work is similar to this project in utilizing a comparative, qualitative analysis that collected data from a range of smart manufacturing companies.…”
