Using Modeling and Simulation to Support Future Medium and Heavy Duty Regulations

Abstract: Other than in Japan, medium and heavy duty vehicles (MHDVs) are not regulated despite accounting for a significant portion of the fuel consumed (about 26% in the US in 2008). Government agencies worldwide are currently evaluating options to address that issue. Due to the large number of vehicle applications, some of them being "one of a kind", vehicle modeling and simulation offers an attractive solution to medium and heavy duty regulations. This paper discusses the advantages and challenges of vehicle simulat… Show more

“…which was developed at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) and has shown strong correlation with real world measured data (Kim et al, 2012(Kim et al, , 2013Rousseau et al, 2006). This software has also been used to develop class 8 truck models with a high level of accuracy (Karbowski et al, 2010;Rousseau and Vijayagopal, 2011). In order to model advanced and recently announced vehicles in Autonomie, preloaded vehicle models are modified and scaled to represent state-of-the-art performance.…”

“…The baseline trucks were modelled based on the data available from manufacturers as well as third parties [5]. Autonomie was used as the tool for this simulation analysis, as it has various library models that have already been validated [6] [7] [8] [9]. Final drive ratios, tire sizes and vehicle weight are also set based on the baseline vehicle.…”

“…The total fuel consumption portion of MHDVs in the US is about 26%, and other countries also have high fuel consumption in the MHDV sector [1]. Therefore, many government agencies are considering this issue to control environmental problems and promote energy conservation in the MHDV sector.…”
