Forage and Seed Yield Variation of Alfalfa Cultivars in Response to Planting Date

to study the direct and indirect effects of yield attributes on forage and seed yields of alfalfa. Six alfalfa genotypes from Egypt (Aswan population, Balady population, El-Dakhla population, Ismalia-1 cultivar, and nitrogen fixing population and Siwa population) beside one variety from USA (Genan) were used in this study. The experiments were laid out in randomized complete block design using split plot arrangement with three replications. Three sowing dates of 20 th October (D1), 20 th November (D2) and 20 th December (D3) were allocated in the main plot while the seven alfalfa genotypes were arranged in the sub plots. Three cuts were taken from each sowing date at 80, 125 and 165 days after sowing at 80, 45-and 40-day intervals, respectively. After taking three cuts, the plants were left out until flowering and seed production which take place in the first week of April, May and June for studied sowing dates, respectively. The obtained results show that, the Ismalia-1 cultivar exceeded the other tested genotypes for seasonal fresh forage yield trait (6.16 kg m-2) under third planting date (20 th December) while, El-Dakhla genotype superior with regard to seasonal dry forage yield (2.00 kg m-2) under the same planting date. Otherwise, Aswan population produced the maximum mean values of Seasonal protein forage yield (0.60 kg m-2) under second planting date (20 th November). In addition, Genan cultivar which was introduced from USA gave the maximum seed yield plant (1.20 g) under the first planting date (20 th October). Furthermore, the obtained results show that the fresh forage yield had the greatest influence on protein forage yield in each sowing date. Meantime, the results of path analysis show that, number of seeds/pod and number of pods/plant considered the most effective traits in seed yield/plant of alfalfa. Moreover, negative correlation between seed yield/plant and 1000-seed weight was observed. Therefore, selection for improving seed yield/plant may be carried directly through selection for number of seeds/pod and number of pods/plant.

RESUMO -Objetivou-se com este trabalho, por meio de uma análise de trilha para rendimento de sementes de gramaforquilha (Paspalum notatum Flügge var. notatum), obter informações básicas para utilização em estratégias de manejo para maior produção de sementes e, consequentemente, maior ressemeadura natural, proporcionando, assim, condições para maior persistência da espécie na pastagem. Foram analisadas as seguintes variáveis: número de perfilhos vegetativos, número de perfilhos reprodutivos, número de racemos/inflorescência, número de sementes/inflorescência, peso de mil sementes e rendimento de sementes. A variável que mais se correlacionou com o rendimento de sementes foi o número de perfilhos reprodutivos (r = 0,94), e essa correlação se deu praticamente apenas pelo efeito direto dessa variável. Entre as demais variáveis, destacou-se o número de perfilhos vegetativos, com coeficiente de correlação de -0,83 e efeitos indiretos sobre os demais componentes do rendimento de sementes. O número de perfilhos reprodutivos parece ser a principal característica a ser considerada na busca de maior produção de sementes de Paspalum notatum.Palavras-chave: componentes do rendimento de sementes, perfilho reprodutivo, perfilho vegetativo, peso de sementes Correlation and path coefficient analyses of seed yield components in the bahia grass (Paspalum notatum Flügge var. notatum)ABSTRACT -The objective of this work was, through a path analysis of seed yield in Paspalum notatum, to obtain basic information for using in management strategies to improve seed production and consequently, high natural reseeding and a better persistence of the species in the pasture. The following variables were analyzed: number of vegetative tiller, number of reproductive tiller, number of raceme/inflorescence, number of seeds/inflorescence, weight of 1000 seeds and seed yield.The most correlated variable with seed yield was the number of reproductive tiller (r = 0.94), and this occurred because its direct effect. Among the other variables, number of vegetative tiller also had a high correlation coefficient (r = -0.83) and indirect effects on the other components. The number of reproductive tiller seems to be the main characteristic to be considered when searching for a higher seed production in Paspalum notatum. Legumes are bee-pollinated, but to a different extent. The importance of the plant–pollinator interplay (PPI), in flowering crops such as legumes lies in a combination of the importance of pollination for the production service and breeding strategies, plus the increasing urgency in mitigating the decline of pollinators through the development and implementation of conservation measures. To realize the full potential of the PPI, a multidisciplinary approach is required. This article assembles an international team of genebank managers, geneticists, plant breeders, experts on environmental governance and agro-ecology, and comprises several sections. The contributions in these sections outline both the state of the art of knowledge in the field and the novel aspects under development, and encompass a range of reviews, opinions and perspectives. The first three sections explore the role of PPI in legume breeding strategies. PPI based approaches to crop improvement can make it possible to adapt and re-design breeding strategies to meet both goals of: (1) optimal productivity, based on an efficient use of pollinators, and (2) biodiversity conservation. The next section deals with entomological aspects and focuses on the protection of the “pest control service” and pollinators in legume crops. The final section addresses general approaches to encourage the synergy between food production and pollination services at farmer field level. Two basic approaches are proposed: (a) Farming with Alternative Pollinators and (b) Crop Design System.
