Using Reciprocal Teaching for Improving Students’ Skills in Mathematical Word Problem Solving - A Project of Participatory Action Research

Abstract: <p style="text-align: justify;">This study aims to present the potential of Participatory Action Research (PAR) to bring together the experiences of teachers and researchers with the intention of improving teaching practices and students’ learning outcomes. Participants in the study were 7 teachers, their 160 fifths grade students, and researchers (authors). Teachers and researchers participated as partners in all collaborative activities during the period of 12 weeks.  All teachers assisted by the resea… Show more

“…Responses to item 3 validates the fact that reading comprehension is vital to learners' ability to solve word-problems. According to Kurshumlia and Vula (2021) and Vula et al (2017), learners need to have a strong mental visualization ability of a word-problem which will help them comprehend it and subsequently solve the problem. Word-problems are incredibly challenging to solve without a solid foundation in reading comprehension.…”

“…According to Boonen et al (2016) and Daroczy et al (2015), ability to easily understand what is required and having a clear mental picture of the problem at hand are both essential building blocks for solving word-problems. The mental visualization of wordproblems and comprehending the text was reported by Kurshumlia and Vula (2021) and Vula et al (2017) to be one of the successful ways for learners to solve word-problems.…”

“…An incredible level of critical thinking, reasoning, and comprehension could be enhanced by a reciprocal teaching approach [23]. The Reciprocal-Teaching approach's primary activities, collaborative learning, allowed the growth of cognitive and metacognitive strategies [24]. For diverse students who are great decoders but weaker comprehends, reciprocal instruction appeared to be a potent evidence-based strategy for comprehension improvement [25].…”
