Using Routine Outcome Measures to Provide Feedback at the Service Agency Level

Abstract: The use of routine outcome measurement (ROM) to assess service effectiveness has been on the rise in mental health settings. However, there is a scarcity of information on the use of ROM data to provide feedback to teams of service providers. In this paper we review the existing literature to identify the principles that can guide the use of ROM data as feedback with the aim to improve quality of service provision in mental health settings. “…Routine outcome monitoring (ROM) pertains to the periodic assessment of treatment outcomes during everyday clinical practice (Hoenders et al, 2014; Siebum, Pijl, & de Wolf, 2015). When used appropriately, ROM has the potential to contribute to better quality of care (on an individual level), as it monitors progression of the client and provides the opportunity to adjust when being “off track.” On a group level ROM could contribute to better quality of care, as it could function as an instrument for benchmarking treatment outcomes (Boswell, Kraus, Miller, & Lambert, 2015; Delespaul, 2015; Roe et al, 2016). From a scientific viewpoint, ROM enables researchers to gain insight into the prevalence, severity and stability of clients’ problems and to enhance practice-based evidence (Delespaul, 2015; Hoenders et al, 2014).…”
