Using simulation tools for optimizing cooling loads and daylighting levels in Egyptian campus buildings

Abstract: This article presents a case of heuristic optimization of cooling loads and daylighting levels in deep halls of Egyptian Universities, using DesignBuilder software, with EnergyPlus and Radiance engines, in order to show the vital role of simulation tools in architects' hands. Generally speaking, campus buildings in Egypt reflect real problems of energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality of the overcrowded educational spaces. The case, studied in the article, is for three drawing halls of different spe… Show more

“…Overhangs [34,47,49,50,57] Well suited for south-oriented rooms, often necessary to avoid overheating in the summer at low latitude climates Louvers [20,31,34,38,39,46,51] Well suited for east and west orientations, fixed devices often require additional internal blinds and work better under clear sky conditions Solar screens [55] Downward tilt angles and 1:1 louvers depth ratio are optimal solutions for achieving good spatial daylight availability without the risk of glare Movable blinds [42] External semi-transparent blinds, together with light shelves, improve illuminance uniformity…”

“…Also, “it provides a range of environmental performance data such as energy consumption, carbon emissions, comfort conditions, daylight illuminance, maximum summertime temperatures, and HVAC component sizes” [50]. In addition, the software has a range of input tabs and database including geometric data of the model, templates of materials, occupancy [51], weather files, natural ventilation, advanced solar shading, and internal comfort [52].…”

“…This involved performing a sensitivity analysis (Morris method and FAST) on the effect of 24 variables, including building height, length, width, rotation, view of the ground, ground reflectivity, insulation thickness, glazing ratio, weather parameters, setpoint temperature, ventilation rates, and variables relating to occupancy and the building environment, on yearly heating loads, heating load per m 3 , heating power, and summer comfort. Other researchers (Samaan et al, 2018) employed a holistic approach that involved conducting different types of sensitivity analysis and uncertainty analysis.…”
