Using Situated Interviews to Engage Frail Older People in the Co-production of Improved Emergency Healthcare

Abstract: Including frail older people in the development and improvement of healthcare is a topical issue and co-production represents a common approach. How to practice co-production effectively, however, remains challenging, particularly when including vulnerable populations. This paper provides methodological highlights from a project designed to improve care pathways for frail older people. The project applied a co-constructive approach to co-production using situated interviews. We make four recommendations for pr… Show more

“…Lastly, regarding the subjectivity distinction, our expectation in this respect is once again confirmed only at M1, where the criterion of lay actors' satisfaction inherently encourages a focus on lay actors' subjective experiences with the NW, thereby giving them a voice in the co-production process (Cluley et al ., 2021).…”

“…For example, the perception of service users can provide reliable evidence into how they experience a service, provided that the data collection and analysis are conducted rigorously (Talbot, 2010). Our expectation about this distinction stems from the fundamental rationale behind co-production, that is, the involvement of co-producers, especially citizens, in the production of public services (Cluley et al ., 2021). Consequently, we expect that co-production performance criteria and related indicators should be inherently subjective to capture the lay actors' experience with the service co-production.…”

“…A key feature of this method is that it enables a matrix-based presentation of qualitative data. The framework method was developed in the 1980s and is widely used in qualitative health research scholarship (e.g., Wiertsema et al, 2021) but only rarely in the public administration literature (e.g., Cluley et al, 2021).…”

“… 5 There are reasons to believe that greater sensitivity to lived experience can enhance service delivery for people living with frailty. 27 There are also moral reasons to engage vulnerable people in the design of public services, 28 which include an assumption of capacity to make informed decisions and a desire for the experience of service delivery to be positive. In a health context, people need information about the potential risks and benefits of treatment options at a level of detail that helps them to make an informed choice with professional guidance.…”
