Summary
Limiting the fault current passing through substation components can affect their failure rate reduction. However, evaluating the exact value of the failure rate reduction is complicated. This complexity is because the fault current reduction for each component varies as fault current limiter (FCL) is installed on different substation locations. In this paper, an approach is proposed to calculate the components failure rate after installation of FCL in the substation. In this approach, an equation is derived using 3 factors consisting of the effect of fault current on failure rate, the value of fault current reduction due to FCL location, and the probability of FCL stuck. The reliability indices are calculated for 3 types of substation configurations, considering different values of active and passive FCL failure rates. In addition, the results obtained for various locations of FCL in the substation are compared to that of the case without FCL.
