“…Lauretani et al [28] proposed cut-off of ≤0.8 m/s for the diagnosis of sarcopenia was also assessed. Finally, the SPPB, a composite measure of lower extremity function, was performed [24,29]. In addition to an assessment of walking speed as described above, it includes an assessment of balance and time to complete 5 chair stands [24,29].…”

“…Finally, the SPPB, a composite measure of lower extremity function, was performed [24,29]. In addition to an assessment of walking speed as described above, it includes an assessment of balance and time to complete 5 chair stands [24,29]. A cut-off of 9 has been suggested to identify at-risk individuals [29].…”

“…It has been validated in Spain [23], showing good reliability and convergent validity with other physical and functional measures. Further, it seems to provide good results when administered in the community, in addition to being well correlated with the Fried frailty criteria and a good predictor of adverse events [24]. With higher scores indicating better performance, the usual cut-off point for determining frailty in the general population is a score of 10 points, although in the FRADEA study [10] (which included patients in long-term care), the best cut-off was found to be 6 points.…”

“…This was recently recommended by the International Working Group as a standard measure of physical performance in frail elderly people [20]. Thus, the SPPB can be used both for research and clinical practice.…”

“…For the balance task, a score of 0 was assigned to those who were unable to perform the test, and a score of 1 was assigned to those who tried but were unable to maintain the tandem stand for >1 s. A score of 2 was assigned for those able to maintain a tandem stand for >1 s but <3 s, a score of 3 for those able to stand for 3-9 s, and a score of 4 for those who maintained the tandem stand for >10 s. The performance total score was calculated by summing the scores and could range from 0 to 12, with 0 as the worst score and 12 as the best [20].…”
