Using the TL Single-Aliquot Regenerative-Dose Protocol for the Verification of the Chronology of the Teutonic Order Castle in Malbork

Abstract: Abstract:The Teutonic Order Castle in Malbork is one of the precious medieval monuments in Europe. Because of the lack of natural rock resources in Pomerania, its walls are built almost exclusively of bricks. The huge volume and rich historical knowledge about the Malbork Castle makes it a marvellous object for TL dating. The parts of well known age can serve for the verification and improvement of dating method. Subsequently, gained in such way knowledge and experience can be applied for discovering the histo… Show more

“…In this case the mortar is about 22% of the wall volume and it has significantly lower radioactivity. As it was shown earlier, however, similar mortar content (radioactivity not lower than 0.5 of brick radioactivity) can influence the age rather in minor range (uncertainty of ~1%) (Chruścińska et al, 2008). “…In order to estimate the equivalent dose (D e ), 100-200 µm diameter quartz grains, were extracted from bricks by the standard procedure including heavy liquid separation and etching in 40% HF (Chruścińska et al, 2008). All OSL measurements were carried out using RISØ TL/OSL System TL-DA-20 equipped with a conventional Hoya U-340 filter and EMI 9235QB photomultiplier.…”

“…Despite this, the dating of burnt materials were and still are determined in many laboratories (e.g. Benea et al, 2007;Blain et al, 2011;Chruścińska et al, 2008;Preusser et al, 2008;Sánchez et al, 2008;Wintle, 2008). It is reasonable to present a list a few applications of the TL method that deserve special attention.…”
