Using the TUG Test for the Functional Assessment of Patients with Selected Disorders

Abstract: One of the tests used for quantitative diagnostics is Timed Up-and-Go (TUG), however, no reports were found regarding the percentage share of individual test components, which seems to have a greater diagnostic value in differentiating the functional status of the patients. The aim of the study was to analyze the percentage of the individual components of the TUG test in functional assessment in a population of healthy children and in clinical trials patients with various diseases. Material and Methodology. Th… Show more

“…It is also important to note that since balance is a very complex function, the results of the balance test used in the current study (TUG) might have been affected by other factors such as peripheral hearing, vestibular, and visual factors. However, TUG is considered to be a good diagnostic tool for balance and risk of falling 42 , and is often being used in research evaluating balance in adult populations 14,43 . Further research should explore these topics in a variety of populations in different age groups and while using a variety of hearing/balance measures and pathologies.…”

“…In this test, participants need to stand up from a seated position, walk 3 m, turn back, and sit down. A decrease in the time needed to complete TUG indicates an improvement in the outcome 13 .…”

“…The Timed Up and Go (TUG) test is a reliable, cost-effective, safe, time-efficient, and one of the most widely used clinical methods to assess mobility, including gait, postural control, and fall risk, among individuals with TBI for both inpatient and outpatient settings ( 7 9 ). TUG assesses various motor tasks such as sit to stand, standing, walking, and turning.…”
