Using the virtual learning environment WebCT to enhance information skills teaching at Coventry University

Abstract: This paper describes the use of the virtual learning environment WebCT to respond to a number of challenges in user education work at the University of Coventry. The effectiveness of the VLE‐based method of delivering information skills training was evaluated over two years. Certain problems, were ironed out between year one and year two of the implementation of the information skills course. This led to a seeming decline in reported achievement levels between the two years. However, such diminishing of learni… Show more

“…Interestingly, the evidence of this study does not point to student learning having yet moved decisively from a process centred on acquisition to one founded on participation as argued by Collis and Moonen (2001) and Mason and Rennie (2008). Students did not radically change their learning methods as a result of the provision of new technology tools, although the authors acknowledge that their use of learning technology was pragmatic rather than optimal (Patalong, 2003). The technology tools were very much grafted onto an existing course rather than forming an integral part of the course design.…”

“…There are few peer reviewed studies of the use of a VLE to enhance the student learning experience within larger cohorts (above 200 students). Patalong (2003) and Vigentini (2009), respectively, report on the use of VLEs to enhance an information skills course (cohort size: 700) and a first year undergraduate psychology class (cohort size: 288). Wood and Henderson (2010) describe the implementation of asynchronous discussion boards in a 200 strong psychology class.…”

“…An example is Patalong (2003) who describes using a Virtual Learning Environment to enhance information skills teaching at Coventry University. The approach involved customisation and user focus, but still centred on information sources.…”

“…Students appeared to be more engaged in the Blackboard sessions and were less eager to pack up their bags and leave before the end of the class! The format for the summative assessment during the final session was strongly influenced by the experience of librarians at Coventry University (UK) who had implemented formal assessments under exam conditions using WebCT (Patalong, 2003). While this knowledge was invaluable, the students at De Montfort University did not appear to work out ways in which to cheat as quickly or effectively.…”
