Using UAV Photogrammetry to Analyse Changes in the Coastal Zone Based on the Sopot Tombolo (Salient) Measurement Project

Abstract: The main factors influencing the shape of the beach, shoreline and seabed include undulation, wind and coastal currents. These phenomena cause continuous and multidimensional changes in the shape of the seabed and the Earth’s surface, and when they occur in an area of intense human activity, they should be constantly monitored. In 2018 and 2019, several measurement campaigns took place in the littoral zone in Sopot, related to the intensive uplift of the seabed and beach caused by the tombolo phenomenon. In th… Show more

“…This kind of measures have the advantage that they do not require specification, are easy to implement and describe where the objects differ. It is the kind of approach used in some fields such as geomorphic change detection [ 23 , 24 , 25 ]. However, they lack the flexibility to correctly measure objects with elastic manufacturing tolerances.…”

“…Low-altitude photogrammetry (or UAV photogrammetry) was found to be excellent for an accurate analysis of coastline and littoral areas [ 23 , 24 , 25 ]. The study [ 26 ] thoroughly assessed the accuracy of the applied digital surface model (DSM) that was aimed at detecting changes in a coastal area.…”

“…The study [ 26 ] thoroughly assessed the accuracy of the applied digital surface model (DSM) that was aimed at detecting changes in a coastal area. The authors of [ 25 ] also presented a filtration method involving UAV data that was intended to enhance the matching of coastal area models. The publication [ 27 ] comprehensively described a method of fusing sensory data for coastal protection systems.…”

“…Coastal areas are the focal points of tourist attractions, which translates into an important source of economic income [2][3][4]. Moreover, the study of coastal behavior helps us understand the complex processes that occur in these areas [5,6]. Their understanding leads us to the prevention of coastal erosion, and thus monitoring the evolution of our beaches is essential [6].…”

“…Moreover, the study of coastal behavior helps us understand the complex processes that occur in these areas [5,6]. Their understanding leads us to the prevention of coastal erosion, and thus monitoring the evolution of our beaches is essential [6]. Thus, a methodology for carrying out measurements of some oceanographic phenomena using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV also known as remotely piloted aircraft system or RPAS) have already been presented by other researchers (e.g., [7]).…”
