Background: The internet has an increasing role in both patient and physician education. While several recent studies critically appraised the quality and accuracy of webbased written information available to patients, no studies have evaluated such parameters for open-access video content designed for provider use. Questions/Purposes: The primary goal of the study was to determine the accuracy of internet-based instructional videos featuring the shoulder physical examination. Methods: An assessment of quality and accuracy of said video content was performed using the basic shoulder examination as a surrogate for the Bbest-case scenario^due to its widely accepted components that are stable over time. Three search terms (Bshoulder,B examination,^and Bshoulder exam^) were entered into the four online video resources most commonly accessed by orthopaedic surgery residents (VuMedi, G9MD, Orthobullets, and YouTube). Videos were captured and independently reviewed by three orthopaedic surgeons. Quality and accuracy were assessed in accordance with previously published standards. Results: Of the 39 video tutorials reviewed, 61% were rated as fair or poor. Specific maneuvers such as the Hawkins test, O'Brien sign, and Neer impingement test were accurately demonstrated in 50, 36, and 27% of videos, respectively. Inter-rater reliability was excellent (mean kappa 0.80, range 0.79-0.81). Conclusion: Our results suggest that information presented in open-access video tutorials featuring the physical examination of the shoulder is inconsistent. Trainee exposure to such potentially inaccurate information may have a significant impact on trainee education.

Internet and networked technologies have expanded delivery mode opportunities in education. In recent years, many universities have offered either predominantly online courses or online learning platforms embedded within traditional modes of on-campus and face-to-face learning. Online learning has thus developed into a priority within modern educational facilities and has grown significantly both in Australia and other countries. To consider the connection between student learning and effective integration of technology, this study provides an overview about the requirements for learning in a modern society. It will discuss current reforms in higher education to accommodate a new generation of digital Australians and to prioritize teaching and learning issues in online environments.

A quality assessment of respiratory auscultation material on YouTube

YouTube contains a large volume of medical educational material. This study assessed the quality of respiratory auscultation videos contained in YouTube. Videos were searched for using the terms 'breath sounds', 'respiratory sounds', 'respiratory auscultation' and/or 'lung sounds'. In total, 6,022 videos were located, 36 of which were considered suitable for scoring for video accuracy, comprehensiveness and quality. The average score was 3.32/6 (55.3%±1.30). Video score correlated with time-adjusted YouTube metadata: hits per day (0.496, p=0.002) and likes per day (0.534, p=0.001). Video score also correlated with the fi rst search page on which the video was located in the 'breath sounds' and 'lung sounds' searches (-0.571, p=0.001; -0.445, p=0.014, respectively). The quality of videos was variable. Correlation between video score and some metadata values suggests that there is value for their use in judging video quality. However, the large number of videos found and inability to fi lter these results quickly makes locating educational content diffi cult.
