Uterine enzyme changes in thyroidectomized rats at parturition

Abstract: Summary. Rats were thyroidectomized at different stages of gestation and killed at parturition. Acid phosphatase of uterine horns was significantly (P < 0\m=.\05)lower in animals thyroidectomized at later stages of pregnancy, whereas alkaline phosphatase was significantly lower in those thyroidectomized earlier as compared to intact pregnant animals. The activities of glutamic oxaloacetic acid and glutamic pyruvic acid transaminases also showed significant alterations in some of the thyroidectomized animals. T… Show more

“…Also, an enhanced response to hCG with development of large cystic ovaries-but few corpus lutea-was also described in hypothyroid rats (117). In mature female rats, hypothyroidism did not result in sterility but interfered with gestation, especially in its first half, with resorption of the embryo and subsequent reduction in litter size and increase in stillbirths (118,119). Ruh et al (111) reported increased E 2 binding to the uteri of hypothyroid rats, a finding that was not confirmed by others (120).…”

“…Hypothyroidism in hamsters and cows is associated with abnormal estrous cycles, 96,97 and in hypothyroid hens there is a decrease in egg production 97. In the mature female rat, hypothyroidism apparently does not result in sterility but does interfere with gestation, especially in the first half of pregnancy, 98 with resorption of the embryo and subsequent reduction in litter size and an increase in stillbirths 99…”
