Uterine Epithelioid Angiosarcoma on F-18 FDG PET/CT

Abstract: Uterine epithelioid angiosarcoma can have conventional imaging characteristics similar to those of other uterine tumors, such as leiomyoma, leiomyosarcomas or hemangioendothelioma. Uterine epithelioid angiosarcoma exhibiting increased fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (F-18 FDG) activity can be misdiagnosed. A 61-year-old woman who was diagnosed with uterine epithelioid angiosarcoma underwent F-18 FDG positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) as a part of the pretreatment work up for surgery. F-18… Show more

“…This innate characteristic of epithelioid angiosarcoma corresponds to the tendency of gastrointestinal bleeding. PET/CT has been reported to detect primary uterine and pulmonary epithelioid angiosarcoma[ 15 , 16 ] and is of great value in identifying metastases.…”

“…Typically, epithelioid angiosarcomas have characteristic pathologic features such as irregular vascular channels with adjacent atypical pleomorphic epithelioid cells [ 5 ]. These tumors contain many mitotic figures as well as nuclear atypia and patchy areas of hemorrhagic necrosis [ 1 , 5 , 6 ].…”

These tumors contain many mitotic figures as well as nuclear atypia and patchy areas of hemorrhagic necrosis [ 1 , 5 , 6 ]. Epithelioid angiosarcomas stain strongly positive for Vimentin and in most cases are immunoreactive for vascular markers CD31, CD34, and VEGFR-3 and Factor VIII [ 1 , 7 – 9 ].…”

“…AS lesions were FDG-avid (48); therefore, response to chemotherapy was able to be successfully monitored using FDG-PET (4,7). However, the usefulness of FDG-PET in the management of AS is not clear, as only case reports are available in the literature.…”

“…F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) has been utilized to detect AS in a variety of regions, such as the scalp ( 4 ), cardiac right atrium ( 5 ), liver ( 6 ), extremities ( 7 ) and uterus ( 8 ). AS lesions were FDG-avid ( 4 8 ); therefore, response to chemotherapy was able to be successfully monitored using FDG-PET ( 4 , 7 ). However, the usefulness of FDG-PET in the management of AS is not clear, as only case reports are available in the literature.…”
