Uterine Involution and Fertility of Holstein Cows Subsequent to Early Postpartum PGF2α Treatment for Acute Puerperal Metritis

Abstract: The objective was to evaluate the effect of 2 doses of PGF(2alpha) injected early postpartum on uterine involution, serum concentration of acute phase proteins at 12 d postpartum, and fertility in Holstein cows with acute puerperal metritis. Only cows diagnosed with retained fetal membranes and metritis and treated with ceftiofur hydrochloride for 5 d were used in the study. Two hundred cows were assigned randomly to be treated (n = 100) or to serve as controls (n = 100). Treatment consisted of 2 i.m. injectio… Show more

“…During early postpartum period, exogenous PGF 2 α administration can increase the rate of uterine involution which results in evacuation of bacterial contamination from the uterus and subsequently improve conception rate (Nanda et al, 2003). Contrarily, administration of PGF 2 α during the early postpartum phase was associated with improvement in fertility (Pankowski et al, 1995;Melendez et al, 2004). However, the mean number of inseminations required for conception were less (1.33±0.21) in antibiotic group while in PG8, PG25 and control group, these were 1.50±0.22, 1.50±0.22 and 1.66±0.21, respectively.…”

“…It should be mentioned that metritis affected cows were not administered PGF 2α injection on the day 8 PP. Melendez et al (2004) mentioned that in the first seven days postpartum, the PFG 2α level in blood in cows with RFM and metritis…”
