“…It is well known that the environments of homelessness are hazardous and contribute to higher levels of physical and mental health morbidity and mortality (Black et al 1991, Keyes & Kennedy 1992, Pleace & Quilgars 1996, Victor 1997). To date, the research specifically into mental illness amongst homeless people in the United Kingdom has focused on bed and breakfast hotels, hostels, reception centres, lodging houses, soup kitchens, or night shelters (Priest 1971, Tidmarsh & Wood 1972, Weller et al 1987, Timms & Fry 1989, Marshall & Reed 1992, Victor 1992).…”

“…This increase in mortality is explained by high rates of physical and mental illness, substance abuse, and accidents (1,5,6,(8)(9)(10)(11)(12). As a consequence, homeless people are more likely to use acute care services than the general population (1,(12)(13)(14)(15). They also have higher rates of hospitalizations (1,12,14,16), unplanned readmissions (17), and longer lengths of stay (LOSs) (12,16,18).…”

“…Each night more than 4000 individuals sleep in homeless shelters in Toronto, Canada's largest city ( 2). London has a large homeless population ( 3), and about 2000 homeless people live in Madrid ( 4), but relatively little has been published on homelessness in other European cities.…”
