Utilities for treatment-related adverse events in type 2 diabetes

Abstract: Findings suggest that adverse events in T2DM can be a burden for some individuals. The study indicates the potential importance of including information regarding AEs in economic evaluations. Although some states were rated severely in terms of utility; in reality, many of these only last a few days, therefore having a minimal quality-adjusted life year (QALY) impact.

“…Thus, these questionnaires are unfit for assessment of other side effects. Treatment satisfaction, QOL, and compliance with treatment, are affected by positive and negative effects of medication [ 23 , 24 , 27 , 41 , 42 ]. Therefore, it is important to assess both of positive and negative effects of SGLT2 inhibitors on treatment satisfaction and this has not been reported to date.…”

“…10,11 Yet diabetes pharmacotherapy that leads to hypoglycemia and weight gain are correlated with disutility and reduction in HRQoL. 12 From the patient's perspective a reduction in weight gain, or even better weight loss, and the avoidance of hypoglycemia are an important outcomes for medications used in the treatment of diabetes treatment. [4][5][6][13][14][15] Therefore, in the context of RCTs, demonstrating and evaluating the burden of hypoglycemia and obesity/weight gain on HRQoL is important.…”

“…Disutilities for nonsevere symptomatic and severe hypoglycemic events were sourced from a recent time trade-off study in 1603 individuals with T2DM [69]. Disutility values for urinary tract infections and genital mycotic infections were taken from a new time trade-off study in T2DM that was, in large part, performed to provide estimates for these selected AEs potentially related to SGLT2 inhibition [70]. The disutility for the group of osmotic diuresisrelated AEs was derived from a study of symptoms associated with overactive bladder in the general population [71].…”
