Utility of Animal Models for Human Embryo Culture: Nonhuman Primates

Abstract: Nonhuman primates are the closest relatives to humans and therefore our most evolutionary close cousins. While marvelous insights are gleaned from studying rodents and other systems, it is impossible to envision how those mechanistic findings can be responsibly translated to the clinic without the appropriate use of nonhuman primates. Thankfully, noninvasive technologies now permit nonhuman primate studies without endangering the model itself. Work with primates is predicted to continue to lead the fields of r… Show more

“…It is our experience and that of others that some non-human primate embryos will become expanded blastocysts and hatch by day 7–8 23 24 43 . Nevertheless, there are no studies, including this one, that compare the potential of early or late expanding blastocyst embryos in rhesus macaque to embryo quality such as ploidy or ability to implant.…”

“…Historically this has been most strongly recognized in pharmacokinetic studies [3, 4]. More recently, species differences have been pushed further with nonhuman primates showing increased translational validity in, for instance, regenerative medicine utilizing induced pluripotent stem cells [5, 6] and antiviral antibody therapy development [7, 8]. Macaque species are the most common nonhuman primate model, including the rhesus macaque ( Macaca mulatta ) and the long-tailed macaque ( M. fascicularis ), also commonly known as the crab-eating or cynomolgus macaque.…”
