Utility of Biochemical Markers of Bone Turnover and Bone Mineral Density in Management of Osteoporosis

Abstract: 2 Biochemical markers of bone turnover (bone-turnover markers) are released during bone formation or resorption and can be measured in blood and/or urine. The concentration of bone-turnover markers in serum or urine reflect bone remodeling activity and can potentially be used as surrogate markers of the rate of bone formation or bone resorption. While the diagnosis of osteoporosis is based on bone mineral density (BMD), the absolute fracture risk for a particular BMD measurement varies several fold depending o… Show more

“…Generally, this bone marker is reduced when bone stability is increased (Briot and Roux, 2005;Vasikaran, 2008) and in this study, Phy clearly increased BMD, BMC, and breaking strength. Probably, the elevated concentration of SCL was not a sign of decreased bone stability but of accelerated bone turnover.…”

“…TRAcP is localized within the ruffled border area of the osteoclasts, where it plays a role in bone resorption via the production of destructive hydroxyl radicals [60,61] . CTX telopeptides are proteolytic fragments of type 1 collagen formed during bone resorption [62] . CTX telopeptides are sensitive and specific markers of bone resorption in the context of metabolic bone disease [63] .…”

“…The LSC was less for the raloxifene study -45% CTX and -27% PINP in comparison to the TRIO study (-56% CTX, -38% PINP). There are several ways that LSC can be calculated [10,29] .…”
