Utility of patient‐specific silicone renal models for planning and rehearsal of complex tumour resections prior to robot‐assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy

Abstract: Objective To describe our experience using patient-specific tissue-like kidney models created with advanced three-dimensional (3D)-printing technology for preoperative planning and surgical rehearsal prior to robot-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (RALPN). Patients and Methods A feasibility study of 10 patients with solid renal masses who underwent RALPN after preoperative rehearsal using 3D-print kidney models. A single surgeon performed all surgical rehearsals and procedures. Using standard preope… Show more

“…Of 15 studies, 8 (53%) provided quantitative assessments of 3D printed kidney models with reported applications (16,18,24,29,30,(32)(33)(34). Comparison of dimensional accuracy or renal tumour volume between 3D printed models and original imaging data/or surgical results was reported in 5 studies (18,24,(32)(33)(34).…”

“…Comparison of dimensional accuracy or renal tumour volume between 3D printed models and original imaging data/or surgical results was reported in 5 studies (18,24,(32)(33)(34). Results of these studies showed that 3D printed models are highly accurate in replicating anatomical structures or detecting tumour volumes with mean difference <10% in dimensional measurements between 3D printed models and original imaging data or surgically resected specimens ( Table 1).…”

“…Lasser et al [12] and Ueno et al [13] reported that 3D reconstructions predicted intra-operative findings at robot-assisted PN. Von Rundstedt et al [14] published 10 cases of robotassisted PN rehearsed on silicon 3D printed models and found a precise correlation with the intra-operative features of tumors.…”

“…Three‐dimensional reconstruction and printing of kidneys containing renal masses has been reported (Silberstein et al, ; Knoedler et al, ), and it has been shown that generating patient‐specific customized 3D models is valuable; it provides an accurate representation of enucleation time and resected tissue volume, assists in surgical decision‐making, and improves surgical training (Von Rundstedt et al, ). Moreover, 3D models of the kidney are advantageous for transplantation surgery (Kusaka et al, ) and to facilitate the patient's pre‐surgical understanding of their kidney tumor and surgery (Zhang et al, ).…”

“…Moreover, 3D models of the kidney are advantageous for transplantation surgery (Kusaka et al, ) and to facilitate the patient's pre‐surgical understanding of their kidney tumor and surgery (Zhang et al, ). The silicone or wax kidney models are based on the preoperative CT or magnetic resonance data and are compared with the 3D reconstruction and patient radiological data, or with post‐operative specimens (Von Rundstedt et al, ). However, only one study validating a 3D model of the renal pelvis and ureter has been reported to date (Adams et al, ).…”
