Utility of Pop-Up Satellite Archival Tags to Study the Summer Dispersal and Habitat Occupancy of Dolly Varden in Arctic Alaska

Abstract: ABSTRACT. In Arctic Alaska, Dolly Varden Salvelinus malma is highly valued as a subsistence fish; however, little is known about its marine ecology. New advances in electronic tagging, such as pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs), provide scientists with a fishery-independent means of studying several aspects of this species' movement and ecology. To evaluate the usefulness of this technology, we attached 52 PSATs to Dolly Varden in the Wulik River, which flows from northwestern Alaska into the Chukchi Sea, … Show more

“…For tagging, Chinook salmon were carefully removed from the water of the ocean or the live box with a knotlessmesh dip net and placed in a custom-fabricated tagging cradle that contained flowing seawater. PSATs were attached to Chinook salmon using a "tag backpack" system described in Courtney et al (2016). After a PSAT was secured to a fish, it was immediately released headfirst into the ocean.…”

“…Tags were attached to Pacific cod using a "tag backpack" system that was and successfully used for tagging salmon [20][21][22]. The backpack system consisted of two components; the tag bridle (a harness that was implanted into the fish) and the tag that was attached to the bridle (Fig.…”
