Utility of Right Ventricular Tissue Doppler Imaging: Correlation with Right Heart Catheterization

Abstract: RV myocardial strain correlates significantly with pulmonary hemodynamics in patients with pulmonary hypertension and normal left ventricular function. However, there is no correlation with RV performance in patients with left ventricular dysfunction.

“…RV systolic strain was normal at rest in all groups and comparable to reported values of healthy 4–16-year-old children 34. In adults with normal LV function, RV peak systolic strain correlates with invasive measurements of mean PAP and pulmonary vascular resistance (r=0.59 and 0.60, respectively, both p<0.001) 35. Since in our study, no child had clinical or echocardiographic evidence of LV dysfunction, normal RV strain suggests normal RV haemodynamics at rest.…”

“…The relaxation time is prolonged during hypoxia 41. RV myocardial systolic strain is another surrogate marker of pulmonary hypertension because it correlates well with pulmonary vascular resistance 35 42. We assessed both these new, indirect markers: RV relaxation time increased with hypoxia to a similar degree in all three groups.…”

“…This is in discordance to our postoperative findings. In their study, there was no postoperative patient, and patients with prosthetic valves were excluded [11]. In the presented study, strain and strain rate showed the weakest correlations with PVR of all parameters tested, with almost no association in group 1 patients.…”

“…These findings are particularly important, as previous observations have promoted echocardiography as a tool for the functional evaluation of patients with PAH [10,30]. In this context, strain echocardiography has been reported as a surrogate of pulmonary haemodynamics in smaller heterogeneous populations, including patients with PAH due to ischaemic LV failure or chronic thromboembolism [31].…”
