Utility of sentinel lymph node biopsy in papillary thyroid microcarcinoma

Abstract: Purpose: There are many studies on sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy in thyroid carcinoma but SLN biopsy (SLNB) in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) remains open to debate. Therefore in this retrospective study, the usefulness of SLNB in thyroid carcinoma patients who had micro-PTC without cervical lymphadenopathy was assessed. Methods: SLNB was performed in 114 patients who were diagnosed with micro-PTC in a single lobe without palpable or ultrasound-detected lymph node at the tertiary center between January 20… Show more

“…Sentinel lymph node biopsy has reached consensus as a staging procedure in patients with breast cancer and malignant melanoma, but the role of SLNB in thyroid cancer is unclear. After its introduction by Kelemen et al (15) in 1998, many authors described the benefi t of SLNB in patients with thyroid cancer (13,(16)(17)(18)(19). However, some authors have reported that the clinical use of SLNB in the treatment of differentiated carcinoma appears to be uncertain due to the lack of importance of lymph node dissection for the prognosis of the disease and thus the absence of a clear benefi t of SLNB in papillary thyroid carcinoma (20)(21)(22).…”
