Utility of the oestrogen‐dependent vaginal candidosis murine model in evaluating the efficacy of various therapies against vaginal Candida albicans infection

Abstract: The efficacy of yogurt treatment against vaginal candidosis (VC) was examined using an oestrogen-dependent vaginal candidosis (EDVC) murine model. The EDVC mouse model was constructed by inoculating mice with viable Candida albicans cells under pseudo-oestrus conditions. Vaginal fungal burden in the various mouse groups was evaluated at several time points following the induction of VC. Untreated and yogurt-treated naïve mice exhibited background levels of VC (<6000 CFU per mouse). Candida albicans colonisatio… Show more

“…Estrogen predisposes to VC by several proposed mechanisms, including the enhancement of the pathogenic potential of Candida species and the suppression of host immunity [7-11]. Induction of a pseudoestrous state by estrogen is routinely used to establish experimental persistent C. albicans vaginal infection in rodents [10,12-14]. Furthermore, estrogen, administered on a weekly basis, can induce persistent VC in naive non-germ-free Balb/c mice [13].…”

“…An experimental mouse model of Candida vaginitis has been established and historically used for the past few decades to study mucosal host response to Candida as well as for testing antifungal therapies 3,4,11,13,16,17,19,21,24,25,37 . The protocols presented here incorporate efficient and less labor-intensive methods, and appear to be one of the most optimized model systems of Candida vaginitis described to date.…”
