Nowadays, sun care products become one of the most developed market amounts of 13.5 billion USD in 2020 and projected to become 20.1 billion USD in 2027, growing by 5.8% per year. The need for sun care products derived from natural ingredients is also increasing as people worry about the side effect of synthetic material. Gambier leaf contains a lot of polyphenol compounds such as catechin that have antioxidant properties. Antioxidant is useful as a defense system against free radicals and ultraviolet radiation. The Objective of the research was to find out the physical characteristics (stability, color, pH, viscosity) and the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) score of sunscreen lotions containing extract gambier leaf. Gambier leaf extract was formulated into lotions with different concentrations: 0% (control); 0,25%; 0,5%; and 1% with three replicates. The ability of the lotion with gambier leaf extract as sunscreen was measured by determining SPF (Sun Protection Factor) score in vitro using a UV-vis spectrophotometer. The result showed that lotion with 0%; 0.25%; 0.5%; and 1.0% concentration has good physical stability during storage. Lotion’s SPF scoring showed that the SPF score in the lotion was increasing along with the addition of gambier leaf extract on each concentration. The SPF score for the concentration 0.25%; 0.5%; and 1.0%. were as follows: 7.01; 12.45; dan 26.55; and pH was about 5.55 – 6.93. Gambier extract with a concentration of 1.0% can be applied for the formulation of SPF lotion

Bangkal leaves contain polyphenols, alkaloids, flavonoids, and quinone compounds that have the potential to act as antioxidants and antibacterial agents. To maximize the use of bangkal leaves, a cosmetic preparation, serum, was prepared. Serum is composed of 3 formulas: formula 1 (3% extract concentration), formula 2 (4% extract), and formula 3 (5% extract). Serum was tested for antioxidant activity using the DPPH (2,2-Diphenyl-1-Picrylhydrazyl) method at a wavelength of 518 nm. Ascorbic acid was used for comparison. Serum was also tested to evaluate its physical properties including organoleptics, pH, spreadability and viscosity. Antibacterial activity was determined using the well diffusion method. The research results showed that the IC50 value of the extract was 171.18 ppm, the bangkal leaf extract serum preparation for formula I was 174.26 ppm, formula II was 209.97 ppm, and formula III was 237.91 ppm. The antibacterial activity of bangkal leaf extract serum (Nauclea subdita) against Staphylococcus aureus formulas 1, 2, and 3 had an average zone of inhibition of 10.67, 12.00, and 14 mm. Based on the antioxidant and antibacterial activity values, bangkal leaf extract serum has moderate antioxidant and antibacterial abilities. Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is one of the most common ulcerative diseases of the oral cavity. RAS causes discomfort so that adequate care is needed to reduce the pain and accelerate the healing of RAS with minimal side effects. Gambier (Uncaria gambir) is used in Indonesian traditional medicine for some oral treatments without significant side effects. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of gambier (Uncaria gambir) extract on pain reduction and the healing of RAS. This pretest-posttest controlled group was conducted on 30 subjects. The subjects were divided into two groups; gambier extract and placebo. They were instructed to apply gambier extract or placebo ointment three times daily for seven days. The severity of pain was measured by using visual analog scale (VAS), the healing duration of recovered RAS was observed, and the changes in the size of the lesion were measured using probe UNC at baseline, day 1, day 3, and day 7. Data were analyzed using SPSS ver. 22 and using two-tailed Mann Whitney and Wilcoxon. This study showed that the pain, the healing, and the size of RAS in gambier extract group significantly reduced on the third and seventh day compared to placebo (p<0.05). It can be concluded that gambier extract has potential effect on the treatment of RAS.
