Utilization of eggshell waste as raw material for synthesis of hydroxyapatite

Abstract: Calcium oxide was successfully derived from eggshell waste. It was employed as a calcium precursor in order to prepare hydroxyapatite. It can be noted that eggshell presented high thermal stability, and it was calcined from 700 to 1000°C for 3 h for calcium oxide formation. Morphological properties were investigated, and it presented the irregular shape with a variation on size. The feasibility of calcium oxide for hydroxyapatite preparation was evaluated by the chemical precipitation with phosphoric acid. X-r… Show more

“…25%) occurred between 650°and 850°C, and this observation was in tune with previous research[25]. Using this mass loss associated with the discharge of CO 2 , the percentage of CaCO 3 (98.28%) present in the ES was calculated with the aid of equation (3.2)[24].where %x CO 2 is the mass loss due to the discharge of CO 2 and W CaCO3 and W CO2 are the molar mass (in g/mol) of CaCO 3 and CO 2 , respectively.…”

“…Starting from the initial temperature (30°C) to 195°C, a very slow decrease in mass % (1.65%) is visualized in the TG profile which is attributed to the dehydration of the sample [21,24,25]. The weight loss for a second time continued up to 460°C with the similar relaxation mode and Here in this research work, we intended to examine the coupled effect of particle size of the source materials and calcination temperature to synthesize Hap by the solid-state method.…”

“…Typical characteristic bands corresponding to the carbonate groups of the CaCO 3 component of hydroxyapatite are located around 1411 cm −1 and 1465 cm −1 . The sintered samples showed small frequency bands around 2345 cm −1 and 2353 cm −1 ascribed to the release of CO 2 during heat treatment [10]. The initial formative indicator of hydroxyapatite at all point of sintering (900 °C, 1000 °C, 1100 °C) was in the form of a pronounced broad band around 1000 cm −1 –1100 cm −1 which can be ascribed to asymmetric stretching mode of vibration of PO 4 group.…”

“…7a that BES exhibited strong absorption in the visible region in comparison to CES. It could be attributed to the increase in the crystalline size of the BES particle (23 nm) [27,28]. Usually bigger size crystallite has fewer grain boundaries, leading to less radioactive combination centers in the material.…”
