Utilization of magnetic GAC adsorbent for the removal of TSS and turbidity parameters in tofu wastewater

Abstract

The tofu industry in Indonesia is one of the most popular industries among Indonesians. Unfortunately, almost all tofu industries in Indonesia do not treat their wastewater correctly. Tofu liquid waste contains many pollutants as organic molecules and solids in suspension. This study aims to treat tofu liquid waste using magnetic GAC thus it is safe when when discharged into bodies of water. The adsorption process in tofu wastewater research is carried out using adsorbents. The adsorbent used is Granular Activated Carbon (GAC). The adsorbent activation process applies the wet activation method, and magnetic GAC is modified green coprecipitation method synthesis. Based on the completed research, it was found that the best allowance for turbidity test was the 15 minutes adsorption time treatment given a magnetic GAC concentration of 10 g/L with the removal efficiency of 73.92% and the best TSS concentration was adsorbtion with a magnetic GAC concentration of 7.5 g/L within 30 minutes adsorption time with a removal efficiency of 56.76%.
