Utilization of Natural Zeolite and Perlite as Landfill Liners for in Situ Leachate Treatment in Landfills

Abstract: The potential long term environmental impacts of a landfill on groundwater quality depend on its liner material properties. In case synthetic liner materials are damaged during the construction or operation, many of the original chemical and biological constituents are removed by filtration and the adsorptive action of natural liner materials such as natural zeolite, perlite and bentonite minerals. Before leachate treatment, reduction of these constituents is important not only to leachate percolation, but als… Show more

“…There are numerous other applications (Perlite Institute, 2009 ). Perlite has been studied as an ingredient in toothpaste (Collins et al, 2005 ; Stamm, 2007 ), a dietary supplement for broilers (Tatar et al, 2012 ), a component of swine-fodder (Duchstein, 1982 ), a component of landfill liners for the in situ leachate treatment of landfills (Ozel et al, 2012 ), for the removal of cadmium, nickel, and lead from aqueous solutions (Aminifard et al, 2011 ; Malakootian et al, 2011 ; Torab-Mostaedi et al, 2010 ), as a passive material in the form of ceiling tile for removal of ozone from indoor air (Cros et al, 2011 ), in mycotoxin detoxification of animal feed (Huwig et al, 2001 ), and as a component of a stormwater filter (Gironás et al, 2008 ).…”

“…The migration of these substances in water surface and rock ambient poses a major threat to the environment, especially to the quality of surface and groundwater [ 1 ]. There are studies dealing with the modelling of the migration of these substances in groundwater in Taiwan [ 2 ], along with efforts to influence the quality of leachate directly in situ using adsorbent materials based on zeolite and perlite [ 3 ]. Taking into account that landfilling is, and in the near future will continue to be, one of the most widespread methods of waste disposal, it is necessary to study this issue in detail.…”
