The economic development of a country depends on the use of energy in various processes, the use of natural sources to generate energy resources has great potential. Environmental issues such as global warming have aroused interest around the world regarding bioenergy, such as biomasses that generate a low carbon impact and are susceptible to transformation, such as sugarcane and corn. The study aims to evaluate the main energy crops and their transformation processes, as well as obtain an overview of the main bioethanol producing countries and analyze the productivity of ethanol from sugarcane and corn. Exploratory research was carried out, using published databases related to the topic and classification by relevance. It was possible to observe that the main ethanol producers in the world are the United States, using corn, and Brazil, using sugarcane and recently corn, the production of first-generation ethanol from these biomasses has different processes, where sugarcane is capable of direct fermentation, whereas corn fermentation is indirect. The production of ethanol from corn has increased in recent years in Brazil and has generated a great industrial and economic development. This concludes the importance of using biomass as a precursor of energy in the development of a country.

Smart buildings have grabbed the attention of researchers since the 1980s. Until now, there has been no specific definition for smart buildings, which came from modern technologies and applications that rely on smart systems, significantly affecting the construction industry. Based on the importance of the administrative building sector in Egypt, this study proposed a general framework enumerating smart systems that positively impact this sector at the environmental, social, and economic levels (the three key pillars of sustainability). Various methods were used, including induction, descriptive, analysis, survey, and deduction. It enumerated and analyzed the Egyptian context through three case studies to reveal the gap between their current situation and the one hoped for in its three categories, Smart Security and Safety Systems, Smart Auxiliary Systems, and Smart Entertainment Systems. The findings of this study for the first category showed an average of 47% for security systems and 67% for safety systems. The category of smart auxiliary systems was divided into five sub-categories, showing 39% in climatic control systems, 60% in energy management systems, 100% in HVAC control systems, 50% in lighting control systems, and 56% in water management systems. Finally, the smart entertainment systems category was divided into three sub-categories, showing 42% in Wi-Fi and Internet systems, 44% in video surveillance systems, and 67% in sound and video intercom systems. Therefore, these quantitative findings represent promising results that motivate the Egyptian context to move forward in this direction by using smart systems to improve the sustainability of Egyptian administrative buildings.

The escalating concerns surrounding waste management worldwide and the pressing need for sustainable energy sources have prompted innovative solutions at the nexus of resource recycling and self-powered applications. Diapers are disposed of after use in modern society, and widely available diapers are not environmentally friendly, thus posing a significant threat to the environment. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) 2023 report, around 250 million single-use diapers are thrown out daily across the globe. This research presents a pioneering approach to recycling super absorbent polymer (SAP) gels from waste diapers and using them alongside discarded baking sheets to fabricate a maraca-resembled Diaper Waste-based Triboelectric Nanogenerator (DW-TENG). The fabricated DW-TENG is demonstrated for developing a self-powered weather station, enabling real-time wind speed, humidity, and temperature monitoring. The manuscript details the intricate fabrication of the DW-TENG, elucidating design considerations, assembly processes, and the unique roles of SAP powder and baking sheets in the triboelectric energy generation mechanism. In addition, our study quantifies the potential global impact of diaper recycling on energy generation. Based on the calculations, a 4.72 MW power generation is expected yearly, considering the yearly diaper disposal rates. The work highlights the transformative impact of recycling practices for energy generation and represents a promising stride toward a circular and sustainable future.
