Slickwater fracturing has been phenomenally successful in unconventional shale formations due to their unique geomechanical properties. Nevertheless, these treatments consume large volumes of water. On average, hydraulic fracturing treatments use up to 13,000,000 gallons of water in unconventional wells. In an effort to reduce the use of freshwater, research has focused on developing friction reducers (FR) that can be used in high salinity brines such as seawater and produced water. However, commonly used friction reducers precipitate in high salinity brine, lose their friction reduction properties, and cause severe formation damage to the proppant pack. Consequently, this work proposes the use of common surfactants to aid the FR system and achieve salt tolerance at water salinity up to 230,000 ppm. This paper will (a) evaluate five surfactants for use in high salinity FR systems, (b) evaluate the rheological properties of these systems, and (c) evaluate the damage generated from using these systems. Four types of tests were conducted to analyze the performance of the new FR at high salinity brine. These are (a) rheology, (b) static proppant settling, (c) breakability, and (d) coreflood tests. Surfactants with ethylene oxide chain lengths ranging from 6 to 12 were incorporated in the tests. Rheology tests were done at temperatures up to 150°F to evaluate the FR at shear rates between 40-1000 s-1. Proppant settling tests were performed to investigate the proppant carrying capacity of the new FR system. Breakability and coreflood tests were conducted to study the potential damage caused by the proposed systems. Rheology tests showed that using surfactants with high ethylene oxide chain length (>8) improved the performance of the FR at water salinity up to 230,000 ppm. Anionic surfactants performed better than cationic surfactants in improving FR performance. The ammonium persulfate was used as a breaker and showed effectiveness with the proposed formula. Finally, the retained permeability after 12 hours of injecting the FR was over 95%. This shows that after using this system, the productivity of the formation is minimally affected by the new FR system. This research provides the first guide on studying the impact of using different ethylene oxide chain lengths of surfactants in developing new FR systems that can perform well in a high salinity environment. Given the economic and environmental benefits of reusing produced water, this new system can save costs that were previously spent on water treatments.

An optimist says the glass is half-full, a pessimist half-empty, whereas a good engineer says that the glass is twice as big as it needs to be. There has been much debate over the years about the relative functionality, application and even necessity of proppant in delivering effective hydraulic fractures. Often these debates have been directly linked to major changes in core frac applications, more recently in the dominant North American onshore unconventional market. However, the debates have all too often used broad or unclear brush strokes to describe shifting fracture requirements. Meanwhile, the developing oilfield in the rest of the world resides in more permeable areas of the resource triangle, great care must be taken to ensure that conventional lessons hard learned are not lost, but also that unconventional understanding develops. Over recent years there have been many debates and publications on the relative value of the use of proppant (and associated conductivity), although the true question was about appropriate fracture design in different rock/matrix qualities and environments. Certainly, the vast majority of fracturing engineers appreciate the difference between continuous proppant-pack conductivity and other techniques, such as infinite conductivity, pillar fracturing or duning designs. However, there is increasing evidence that conventional fracturing is suffering from populist attitudes, leading to ineffective fracturing. Additionally, and just as impactful, that unconventional fracturing continues to rely on the lessons learned and physics derived directly from our conventional experience but applying this in an entirely different environment. Primarily, the main concern is with the transfer of recent lessons learned and techniques utilised in one rock quality and environment, to an entirely different scenario, resulting in the misapplication, reduced IP30, poorer NPV or reduced long term EUR and IRR. Examples will be referenced where appropriate proppant selection and frac design can be the difference between success and failure. Fundamentally, we have not sufficiently developed our understanding of the role of proppant and conductivity, for application in unconventionals and thereby rely far too much on our previous conventional thinking. While at the same time we are exporting often inappropriate unconventional populist practice into very conventional environments, thereby potentially achieving the abhorrence of the worst of both worlds. This paper will describe and address scenarios where appropriate engineering selection, rather than popularity-based decision making, has resulted in a successful outcome. It will also attempt to ensure that we show the importance of studying your rock, in anticipation of engineering design, and that this should be a key consideration. The paper will also suggest that as an industry we urgently need to address our approach to consideration of conductivity, placement and importance and ensure that unconventional knowledge and learning progresses with a beneficial outcome for all.
The Bakken production system is well established as a premier oil producing basin. Over the last 20 years improvements in drilling and completion designs have led to significant improvements in well productivity and increased EUR. One recent design change has been the incorporation of microproppant in the fracture design, which was deployed in a multi-well field study and shown to improve production, and is the subject of this paper. As the industry continued to move to smaller size proppant, microproppants have been introduced as another potential improvement in the fracture design, supplementing the benefits of 100 mesh sand. It is theorized that microproppant can provide two primary benefits to well productivity – propping open microfractures, which reduces the production decline, and assisting in the breakdown of the perforations, thereby improving cluster efficiency. Production improvement has been documented in various basins across North America, leading one operator to design and implement a multi-well field trial to evaluate the production impact of microproppant in their Bakken completions. This paper will provide a brief overview of microproppant technology and recent deployments across other basins, illustrating both productivity improvement as well as enhanced proppant placement. It will then focus on the multi-well field study performed in the Bakken in late 2021. In this trial, seven wells included the use of microproppant and are compared to 13 offset wells which deployed a comparable completion design, but without the microproppant. In the study area, the lateral lengths and proppant deployed per foot of lateral were held constant, and the wells/results are segregated between the Middle Bakken and Three Forks benches. To date, wells deploying microproppant show an average overall production uplift sufficient for the operator to pursue a larger scale field trial. This paper will discuss the completion design including details on how the microproppant was deployed. It will also include the general, initial production comparison between the trial and control wells. This paper will continue to challenge engineers thinking on the role of proppant and how to best engineer the completion and fracture design to maximize recovery and return on investment. It will review a field study deploying the use of microproppant, as well as the design details, making it beneficial for completion engineers who desire to deploy microproppant. It will also be valuable for reservoir engineers searching for ways to improve cluster efficiency and overall hydrocarbon recovery.
