Utilizing the geological data and remote sensing applications for investigation of groundwater occurrences, West El Minia, Western Desert of Egypt

Abstract: West EL Minia area is considered one of promising areas for future development plans in Egypt. The current research provides an integrated remote sensing data, microfacies analysis, field studies and geochemical approach to investigate the groundwater resources in West El Minia area. Three aquifers were investigated; Oligocene sandstone, Middle Eocene limestone and Nubian sandstone aquifer. New data about two aquifers (Nubian sandstone and Oligocene) are presented in the current study extracted from well loggi… Show more

“…El-Minya area is represented by Tertiary and Quaternary alluvial deposits consist of sand dunes, Nile silt, proto-nil and pre-nil deposits (Klitzsch et al, 1987;El Sayed, 2007 andYousif et al, 2018). According to Abou Heleika and Niesner (2008), West El-Minya area is predominantly composed of Quaternary sediments (Nile Silt, Prenile deposites, Protonile deposites, Sanddunes, Wadi deposites, Playa deposites, Fanglomerate and Gravel), Miocene (Moghra Fm.…”

“…Growing population, agricultural expansion, and urbanization has placed a heavy pressure on water resources (Hanh et al, 2017), the most important problem in Egypt is the ratio between land and human resources (Abdel-Hamid et al, 2010). West El-Minya area is considered one of the promising areas for agricultural sustainability in Egypt (Yousif et al, 2018).…”

“…The annual rainfall value is about 19.6 mm/year (Salem, 2015). So, the input of rainfall to groundwater recharge is limited (Yousif et al, 2018). Evaporation in "El-Minya governorate" ranges from 14.85 mm/month in June to 3.54 mm/month in December, with the average value of 8.92 mm/month and total amount of about 107.04 mm/year.…”

“…The local litho-stratigraphic sequence is ranged from Lower Eocene to Recent, as shown on Figure 5 (reprinted and modified after Yousif et al., 2018 ) and represented by several formations. Bahariya Formation is exposed at the Bahariya Oasis and consists of friable variegated sands, sandstones and claystone, with hard brown ferruginous bands ( Said, 1962 ).…”
