Utilizing Unexpected Results in Water Electrolysis to Engage Students in Scientific Inquiry

Abstract: Water electrolysis, a well-known and simple experiment, confirms that a water molecule comprises hydrogen and oxygen atoms. In this experiment, hydroxide or hydrogen ions generated from each electrode were identified using an indicator based on the assumption that electrodes, electrolytes, and indicators do not participate in the water electrolysis reaction. However, KNO3, which is considered as an electrolyte that is nonreactive during water electrolysis when considering the standard reduction potential, can … Show more

“…We found that a platinum wire is preferable to graphite as it yields superior results. 26,27 For budget reasons or other restrictions, it is still acceptable to use graphite for teaching purposes. 24 In this experiment, Eggen's hydrogen electrode was used as a reference electrode for the measurement of the half-cell potential of electrodes.…”

“…White and others integrated the STEAM education concept into high school physics classrooms [9]. Kim and others emphasized the key of design thinking through mode construction based on case analysis and also used the "Internet +" background to achieve a great turning point in maker education [10]. Goeltz and others from the perspective of core literacy, combined with the reality and challenges of basic education, explored the cultivation of students' rational thinking and the improvement of comprehensive ability by STEAM research activities from the perspectives of cultural foundation, independent development, and social participation and raised questions about the development status of STEM education [11].…”

“…However, in these reports, a Pt cathode is required to facilitate cathodic hydrogen evolution, which would be a major cost for an experiment, especially for undergraduate training. Recently, there has been progress in electrochemistry in chemical education. In particular, the undergraduate laboratory course focusing on electrochemical synthesis has received increasing attention since it can convey the classic and state-of-the-art concept of green chemistry driven by electrons to undergraduate students directly. With these efforts, however, electrochemical chlorination is still unexplored in chemical education.…”
