UV‐Cured Interpenetrating Acrylic‐Epoxy Polymer Networks: Preparation and Characterization

Abstract: Acrylic‐epoxy interpenetrating polymer networks were prepared by means of UV curing. The photopolymerization process was investigated via real‐time FTIR spectroscopy. The hybrid, cured films showed a broad tan δ peak in DMTA demonstrating the high damping properties of the hybrid, cured formulations. A decrease on shrinkage was achieved by increasing the epoxy‐resin content in the photocurable formulation, with a consequent increase in adhesion properties.magnified image

“…A high-damping effect, a lower shrinkage and a better adhesion was noted in acrylate/epoxide IPNs [28]. The reduction of the shrinkage limits the buildup of the internal stress and improves the adhesion.…”

“…The reduction of the shrinkage limits the buildup of the internal stress and improves the adhesion. For example, the percentage shrinkage is 89.89 vs. −13.25 and the adhesion tape is 100% vs. 0% for HDDA/EPOX (50/50) and HDDA, respectively (100% adhesion for EPOX alone) [28]. Broad Tg peaks are observed: 153, 140 and 190 °C for HDDA/EPOX, HDDA and EPOX, respectively.…”

“…Beyond the fact that the free radical photopolymerization of these compounds is really sensitive to the atmospheric oxygen, a significant shrinkage appears, the increase in density yielding to stress, distortions and even cracks 1,2 . Through ring opening polymerization, epoxide monomers exhibit less significant shrinkage 3 . In addition, the corresponding reactive species are able to polymerize in dark reaching a full degree of polymerization.…”
