UV hazard on a summer’s day under Mediterranean conditions, and the protective role of a beach umbrella

Abstract: Mediterranean beaches are very crowded during summer and, because of the high values of solar UV radiation, the potential risk for human health is relevant. In this study, all-day measurements of biologically effective global and diffuse UV radiation for skin (UVBE(eryt)) and eye (UVBE(pker), UVBE(pconj), UVBE(cat)) disorders were carried out on differently tilted surfaces on a summer's day on a Mediterranean beach. The role played by beach umbrellas in protection from excessive sun exposure was also investiga… Show more

“…The spectroradiometer carried out scans of global and diffuse irradiance from 280 to 400 nm with 5 nm steps (Grifoni et al 2005) while simultaneous global and diffuse PAR measurements were performed by means a Licor 190 radiometer; spectral data with a 1 nm resolution were obtained via interpolation of measured values, and the error of this approximation was quantified in the order of 5% (Webb et al 1999). Measurements of diffuse irradiance were taken, according with Kasten (1986), using a small disc that shadowed the diffuser.…”

“…For example, it is well known that prolonged exposure to UV on snow surfaces leads to photokeratitis. Grifoni et al [13] reported a significant contribution of ground albedo and SEA in determining the erythemal UVBE irradiance.…”

“…We decided to use the umbrella to quantify the contribution of the irradiance (diffused and reflected component) coming from the surrounding environment on a shaded surface maintaining constant the field of view (FOV) of the sky. The use of the umbrella was justified to reproduce shading studied in a previous experiment and not because usually used in mountainous environment (Grifoni et al 2005).…”

“…In a recent paper (Grifoni et al 2005) the UV radiative regime of a Mediterranean beach was investigated. The global and diffuse components of UVBE reaching tilted surfaces were illustrated.…”
