UV light induced plasticization and light activated shape memory of spiropyran doped ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers

Abstract: Light activated shape memory polymers (LASMPs) are relatively new kinds of smart materials and have significant technological applications ranging from biomedical devices to aerospace technology. EVA films doped with spiropyran with contents ranging from 0.1% to 3% show efficient UV activated shape memory behaviors if the fixed shape deformation is limited within 80%. For EVA films containing 3% spiropyran, UV irradiation causes a decrease in EVA modulus of about 44%. FT-IR and solid (13)C NMR in association w… Show more

“…Spiropyran (SP) is a well‐known photochromic molecule that can interconvert into a zwitterionic and colored merocyanine (MC) state through a heterolytic ring‐opening reaction induced by external stimuli such as UV‐irradiation, heat, and metal cations . Various photoswitchable derivatives of SPs have been utilized in a wide range of applications including an electro‐mechano‐chemically responsive elastomer, photochromic materials for detection of target proteins, and light‐activated shape memory materials …”

“…This absorption may occur due to the internal friction between the macromolecules, by shape changes (rotation of the carbon-carbon bonds around its own axis) or by flow. Furthermore, in case of impact, the viscous portion is responsible, for the delay in the elastic response, which will depend on the stimulus and on the time necessary to coil and to uncoil the polymer macromolecule [4,[7][8][9].…”
