Abstract: In summary, participants' perception and assessment of the various health risks of UV exposure seem to be realistic, but the UV risk assessment it is not related to the perception of personal risk. One must therefore assume that UV health risk information and education campaigns do not necessarily lead to a change in the perception of personal UV risk. Rather than addressing primarily risk knowledge, UV risk communication should focus more on motivational aspects and consider the role of UV benefit perception.

“…As noted by other authors [3,11], the paradigm that if people know the facts they will change their behavior is too simplistic to explain the UV-related behaviors in the general population. The assessment and perception of the health risks related to UV exposure were demonstrated to be realistic in the population according to a German telephone survey [12]. However, this was not related to a realistic perception of personal risk [12].…”

“…However, measures that are aimed solely at parents and teachers have only limited effects on actual sun protection practices for children [13,28]. Several studies in Germany indicate a reasonable level of knowledge regarding risk factors of skin cancer and sun protection [29][30][31]. Up to 90% of parents are already aware of the increased risk of skin cancer when exposed to the sun [24,30].…”
