o2, V̇co2, and RQ in a respiratory chamber: accurate estimation based on a new mathematical model using the Kalman-Bucy method

Abstract: A respiratory chamber is used for monitoring O(2) consumption (Vo(2)), CO(2) production (Vco(2)), and respiratory quotient (RQ) in humans, enabling long term (24-h) observation under free-living conditions. Computation of Vo(2) and Vco(2) is currently done by inversion of a mass balance equation, with no consideration of measurement errors and other uncertainties. To improve the accuracy of the results, a new mathematical model is suggested in the present study explicitly accounting for the presence of such un… Show more

“…Every day at the beginning of each experimental session, the chamber was calibrated. The algorithm used for computing O 2 consumption (VO 2 mL/ min) and CO 2 production (VCO 2 mL/min) approximated the gas consumption/production during a time interval by adding 2 independent quantities: dynamic (open) and static (closed) gas production (20), consumption being negative production. Values were corrected for temperature, barometric pressure, and humidity.…”

“…Protein oxidation was determined from 24-hour urinary nitrogen excretion (on a BUN Analyzer; Beckman Instruments, Fullerton, California); carbohydrate and lipid oxidation rates were determined from the nonprotein respiratory quotient (RQ). Calibration procedures, precision, and variability of the respiratory chamber have been reported elsewhere (20). Physical activity (PA) was monitored by means of 2 orthogonal ultrasound sensors: the sensitivity of the receivers was set so that respiratory movements were not detected.…”

“…The food given and returned was weighed to the nearest gram on precision scales (KS-01; Rowenta, Berlin, Germany). Resting energy expenditure (REE) and respiratory quotient (RQ) were calculated from oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production and nitrogen urinary excretion according to standard formulas [28]. Results are presented as kJ/24 h and after normalisation to FFM (kJ…”

“…Several groups have developed algorithms based on fundamental equations that yield an improved transient response and suppress measurement noise in the respiratory chamber 4,5,[8][9][10] . Various factors can introduce error into actual measurements, however, such as temperature, humidity, and air pressure.…”
