Vaccination to gain humoral immune memory

Abstract: The concept of immune memory forms the biological basis for vaccination programs. Despite advancements in the field of immune memory and vaccination, most current vaccines are evaluated by magnitude of antigen-specific antibody titers in serum or mucosa after vaccination. It has been shown, however, that antibody-mediated humoral immune memory is established regardless of the magnitude and duration of immune reactions, suggesting that assessment of vaccine efficacy should be performed for several years after v… Show more

“…Humoral adaptive immunity to pre-erythrocytic stages. Successful vaccines against most infectious diseases rely on the generation of effective class-switched, affinity-matured Abs against the disease-causing pathogen (88). Early evidence for the role of Abs in pre-erythrocytic immunity comes from studies using RAS-immunized mice in which Abs against sporozoite surface proteins were protective against parasite challenge (89).…”

“…Studies are in progress to examine how BM plasma cell numbers change after immunization with the seasonal influenza vaccine. A subsequent discussion focused on how infection and vaccination differ in generating long-lived immunity (33,34). It is known that humans infected with influenza virus decades previously possess circulating Abs reactive to the original infecting strain.…”

“…Hence, vaccine efficacy in the long run is influenced by the determinants of immunological memory stimulation, persisting antibodies and kind and type of immune memory cells induced. 14 The primary vaccine-mediated immunological effectors (Table 1) are mainly the antibodies (from B lymphocytes/ cell) 15,16 and sometimes CD8+ and CD4+ T cells. These antibodies bind specifically to a particular kind of toxin or…”
