Abstract: The spread of fake news and misinformation on social media is blamed as a primary cause of vaccine hesitancy, which is one of the major threats to global health, according to the World Health Organization. This paper studies the effect of the diffusion of misinformation on immunization rates in Italy by exploiting a quasi‐experiment that occurred in 2012, when the Court of Rimini officially recognized a causal link between the measles‐mumps‐rubella vaccine and autism and awarded injury compensation. “…In examinations of possible explanations for this global phenomenon, it has been found that novelty is a pervasive component of false rumors, which are significantly more novel than the truth. However, data cannot support the contention that novelty is the only reason, or the main reason, for the spreading of falsehood [13,32]. However, other studies that have focused on the analysis of fake news in social media have reached different conclusions [33,34].…”

“…Disinformation spread by the anti-vaccine movement has led to episodes regarding vaccination provoking easily preventable disasters, such as the measles epidemic in Washington state (January 2019). The spread of false information also explains a decrease in immunization behaviors with respect to measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccinations, explaining the drop in the demand for this vaccine in the UK and the USA between 1999 and 2000 [13].…”

“…15 In Europe, 14,732 cases of measles were reported between February 1, 2017, and January 31, 2018, with the majority of cases seen in Romania (5,224 cases) and Italy (4,978 cases). 16 On the contrary, in January and March 2019, the state of Washington and New York county in the United States, respectively, declared a state of emergency due to growing numbers of measles cases. 16 Given the upsurge of emerging cases, the WHO announced in early 2019 that V-HR was to blame 1 of the 10 biggest threats to global health.…”

“…The systematic review by Demicheli et al, which included 14,700,000 children, found a significantly higher risk of febrile seizure after MMR vaccine exposure, but could not find any association between the vaccine and autism [28]. But there is still a lot of misinformation, especially through social media, which leads to vaccine hesitancy [29].…”
