Vaginal flora in preterm premature rupture of membranes and their sensitivity to commonly used antibiotics

Abstract: Background: Ascending infection is one of the most common etiologies in preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM). Antibiotics are used in PPROM to prolong the pregnancy and to prevent infection. But to prevent drug overuse and resistance, microorganism directed antibiotics should be used. So, this study was planned to evaluate vaginal flora in pregnant women with PPROM and their sensitivity to commonly used antibiotics. Methods: In this prospective cross-sectional study, 50 pregnant women (cases) preterm… Show more

“…Furthermore, the results showed no significant difference in the number of A. baumannii colonizers between women with PPROM and those with NLT. In comparison to a report by Rani et al (2014), where Acinetobacter colonizers constituted 2% of their PPROM cases, we found higher percentage (7.4%) of positivity for A. baumannii in our study. The percentage of A. baumannii-positive in their PPROM cases could even be lower than 2% because the species of Acinetobacter isolated their study were not identified.…”

“…In a cross-sectional study, E. coli was the most common isolated bacteria from lower genital tract culture followed by Staphylococcus aureus and Candida species. [38] The result of the current study supported the previous research in that the bacteria E. coli is the most isolated bacteria from the high vaginal swab.…”
