Vaginal Labiaplasty

Abstract: Labiaplasty is safe and carries a high satisfaction rate. However, current practices remain exceedingly diverse. The authors propose a simplified classification system based on the distance of the lateral edge of the labia minora from that of the labia majora, rather than from the introitus. Key areas for perioperative patient management include patient anesthesia, resection technique used, wound closure, and postoperative care. Further randomized studies using a standardized classification system are required… Show more

“…The width of the labium minus was measured from a vertical line drawn to the base of the labium minus from the widest lateral prominence. According to the Motakef classification, labial protrusion is classified as class 1 (0 – 2 cm), class 2 (2 – 4 cm), and class 3 (> 4 cm) 12 .…”

“…However, upon consideration of anatomic variations, Hodgkinson and Hait ( 1 ) defined the ideal aesthetic picture of female external genitalia as the one in which the labia minora are small and not larger than the labia majora. The Motakef classification is based on the protrusion of the labia minora that exceeds the size of the labia majora ( 2 ) . The Banwell classification categorizes labia according to their shape and morphologic variations ( 3 ) .…”

“…The surgical reduction of the labia minora was first described as an aesthetic motive in the plastic surgery literature by Hodgkinson and Hait ( 1 ) . When we look at the literature, many techniques have been described for labiaplasty: deepithelialized reduction, linear incision, composite reduction, wedge reduction, W-plasty excision or Z-plasty ( 2 ) . The linear excision technique is the most preferred among gynecologists because of its simple and minimally invasive approach.…”
