Valence States Effect on Electrogenerated Chemiluminescence of Gold Nanocluster

Abstract: This work elucidated the valence states effect on the electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) performance of gold nanocluster (AuNC). The N-acetyl-l-cysteine-AuNCs (NAC-AuNCs) and the electrochemical reduction method for reducing the AuNCs were first employed to this study. Results demonstrate that the electrochemical reduction degree of the AuNCs depended on the reduction potential, and the enhancement of the ECL signals was positively correlated with the reduction degree of AuNCs, which indicated that the v… Show more

“…Inspired by these achievements, we are interested in developing AuNC‐based ECL in aqueous solutions . We recently achieved cathode ECL emission of AuNCs in aqueous solution and noted a key effect of valence states . The ECL of N‐acetyl‐ l ‐cysteine‐AuNCs (NAC‐AuNCs) enhanced 30‐fold by valence state regulation, and the ECL efficiency ( Φ ECL ) reached 4.11 %.…”

“…We suspect that the enhanced emission was due to accumulation of some oxidized species. The Au species in Met‐AuNCs are composed of Au 0 and Au I , and the oxidation state of Au could play an important role in the ECL of the AuNCs . Based on the above mechanism, the electrochemically oxidized product of Met‐AuNCs (Met‐AuNCs .+ ) might play a vital role in the enhancement of the ECL.…”

“…In this case, compared with PL emission, the redshift in ECL emission should be caused by the different charged NC species generated by hole/electron injection during electrochemical processes. Moreover, the changes in valence states inside NCs can regulate the ECL efficiency . So here the shoulder ECL peak indicates the presence of some unique species that may be diverse from the light‐excited species.…”

“…QDs were often used to establish electrochemical luminescence (ECL) sensor due to its high fluorescence intensity, unique size-dependent electrochemical properties, long fluorescence lifetime, strong photostability, and ECL parameter tenability [77][78][79][80]. The detection limit based on QDs (0.3 pg/mL) was much lower than that of other detection method (0.65 pg/mL) [71].…”
