Valid publication of four additional phylum names

Markus Göker,
Aharon Oren

Abstract: The International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes (ICNP) now includes the phylum category. For the purpose of the valid publication of their names under the ICNP, we consider here four phyla. Slightly modified descriptions of ‘ Abditibacteriota ’ Tahon et al. 2018 and ‘ Desulfobacterota ’ Waite et al. 2020 are provided to meet the requir… Show more

“…The oldest type genus of an archaeal phylum with a validly published name among the 42 phyla first proposed under the ICNP [3, 4] is Thermoproteus Zillig and Stetter 1982 [23, 24]. More recently, however, Methanobacteriota has been validly published [7], making Methanobacterium Kluyver and van Niel 1936 (Approved Lists 1980) [17, 25] the genus with the first validly published name that is also the type genus of an archaeal phylum. Methanobacterium is well suitable as the type genus for Archaea .…”

“…Their analysis also showed an early branching and an isolated position, respectively, of the phyla know known as Aquificota , Fusobacteriota and Thermotogota . All other bacterial phyla considered in the study were included in a group called ‘ Hydrobacteria ’ [30]; the validly published names of these phyla are now Bacteroidota , Chlamydiota , Chlorobiota , Desulfobacterota , Myxococcota , Planctomycetota , Pseudomonadota and Spirochaetota [3–7]. This makes ‘ Hydrobacteria ’ and ‘ Terrabacteria ’ largely, but not entirely [47], equivalent to Gracilicutes Gibbons and Murray 1978 (Approved Lists 1980) and Firmicutes corrig.…”
