Validation and reproducibility of an FFQ for use among adults in Botswana

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the validity and reproducibility of a 122-item intervieweradministered quantitative FFQ developed to determine food and nutrient intakes of adults in Botswana. Design: Relative validity of the FFQ was evaluated by comparing nutrient and food group intakes against four non-consecutive 24 h recalls administered over 12 months. The FFQ was repeated after 1 year to assess reproducibility. Setting: Kanye, Botswana. Subjects: Seventy-nine adults aged 18-75 years. Results: Spearman correlation … Show more

“…According to the cutoff by Lombard MJ and his colleagues (5), this study found moderate correlations (0.2-0.49) between the average of the two 24-HRs and FFQ for energy (r=0.24), protein (r=0.22), and carbohydrate (r=0.32) and low correlation (<0.2) for fat (r=0.05). The low to moderate correlation coe cients found between the two methods for energy and macro-nutrient intakes are comparable with other previous validation studies (8,10,12,16). However, our nding was lower than those reported by other studies using 24-HRs as their reference method (8,10,12).…”

However, our nding was lower than those reported by other studies using 24-HRs as their reference method (8,10,12). The observed decrease in correlation coe cients could be interpreted as being the result of using only a two day 24-HRs as a reference method.…”
