Validation of a behavioral coding system for measuring mutually responsive orientation in intimate relationships.

Abstract: The present study provides evidence of the reliability and validity of scores from an adapted behavioral coding system for assessing mutually responsive orientation (MRO)-a construct that captures a system of reciprocity, cooperation, and synchronicity-in intimate relationships. Results indicate that MRO is related to other dimensions of relationship quality but is also distinct. By observing MRO, researchers might reveal important relationship dynamics intersecting with enduring vulnerabilities and stressors … Show more

“…Differentiation and relationship satisfaction are associated with the closeness–distance dimensions (as expected), but not autonomy and engagement, contrary to expectations. A possible explanation relates to the gap between information obtained from subjective self‐reports and nonverbal observed information (Brock et al, 2020; Wilson & Wilkinson, 2012). While self‐report questionnaires by their very nature express conscious aspects of one's personality and relationships, joint‐drawing is related to unconscious aspects expressed during creative activity (Snir & Wiseman, 2016).…”

“…Accordingly, this study used a dyadic assessment that focuses on parent‐child mutually responsive orientation (MRO). MRO represents the degree to which two members of a dyad have established a system of reciprocity, cooperation, and synchronicity that helps the dyad to competently navigate interactions (Brock et al., 2020). MRO is characterized by three components: harmonious communication, mutual cooperation, and emotional ambiance (Aksan et al., 2006).…”
