Validation of a Complementary Food Frequency Questionnaire to assess infant nutrient intake

Abstract: Dietary assessment in infants is challenging but necessary to understand the relationship between nutrition and growth and development. Currently no simple, validated methods exist to assess nutrient intake in New Zealand (NZ) infants. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the relative validity and reproducibility of a Complementary Food Frequency Questionnaire (CFFQ) to determine nutrient intakes of NZ infants. Ninety-five parent-infant pairs (infant age 10 ± 1 months) completed the CFFQ twice (CFFQ-1 and … Show more

“…At 9 mo, mothers completed an infant FFQ and fruit/vegetable preference questionnaire online. The FFQ was an abbreviated version of a validated questionnaire and measured infants’ daily vegetable and fruit intake ( 33 ). The total grams consumed over 4 d was divided by 4 to obtain an average daily intake.…”

“…Breastmilk and formula intakes are also measured in this validated tool. Measurement units: Continuous: nutrient values Categories: meeting dietary guidelines Analysis: Compare the mean/median and SD/IQR and meeting guidelines (yes/no) - Postpartum (12 months) [ 53 ] Health status Patient-Oriented SCORing Atopic Dermatitis (PO-SCORAD) Incidence of infections, eczema, and atopic dermatitis will be assessed using the PO-SCORAD, a self-assessment tool for use by parents which has been validated in 12 European countries. Measurement units: Continuous: PO-SCORAD Score (0–90) Categories: incidence of infections, eczema, and atopic dermatitis (yes/no) Analysis: Compare the mean/median and SD/IQR and incidences - Postpartum (12 months) [ 54 ] Health costs Adapted questionnaires from the InFANT Extend Study and the Infant Feeding Practices Study II Participant employment, childcare, and out of pocket costs will be estimated by self-completed questionnaires derived from the Infant Feeding Practices Study II.…”

“…Women with a singleton pregnancy and without a previous history of diabetes were eligible for the GEMS Trial if they planned to give birth within the Auckland and Counties Manukau District Health Boards, Auckland, New Zealand. For the BabyGEMS Study, infant follow-up included assessment of nutrient intake at 9 and 12 months using a previously validated four-day complementary food frequency (CFFQ) questionnaire [11]. Questionnaires were completed on electronic case report forms (eCRF) using the REDCap system and checked for completeness by a member of the research team.…”

“…It has been designed to be completed as a web-based survey using the REDCap database system [16]. Its use at 9 to 12 months of age to estimate nutrient intake has been validated against a four-day weighed food diary [11]. It provided valid estimates of nutrient intakes for 14 out of 19 nutrients and demonstrated good reproducibility for all nutrients [11].…”
